Why Are Electric Cars Growing In Popularity?

Verfasst von Zunsport - 3rd May, 2024

Electric vehicles (EVs) are the future in the car industry with plug-in models now rapidly gaining market share and there are sound reasons why. But how popular are electric cars now?

Electric Cars Will Overpower The Market In The Years To Come

As a green choice, ever-improving performance, and reduced running costs, mean that more people are making the switch to electric. As governments across the globe strive to achieve clean energy targets, a key question of the last few years is 'are electric cars becoming more popular?'

All the indications suggest that they are. Motoring organisation, the RAC estimate that there are now over 450,000 battery-powered vehicles on the UK’s roads, with 77,000 registered in 2022 alone. The UK government reported an increase in sales of EVs of 70% between 2021and 2022. They also state that the country has one of the most extensive charging networks in Europe with popular models such as the Tesla Model 3 and Porsche Taycan, the flag bearers for luxury electric cars.

EVs Make A Difference

Electric cars are far less harmful to the environment than petrol and diesel models. A study on behalf of the Department for Transport found that a new battery-electric car produces a third less greenhouse gas emissions than its petrol-powered equivalent. With a government target to phase out the sales of petrol and diesel cars by 2030, there is a state-driven incentive for motorists to buy an EV as their next vehicle and get ahead of the game without needing to make the switch in a few years' time.

Electric Cars Are Cheaper To Run

Electric cars can be an expensive upfront purchase though prices are falling driven largely by a decrease in the cost of batteries. Industry estimates suggest that running a battery-electric car is £176 cheaper for every 1,000 miles driven than fossil-fuel-powered versions. Different countries are introducing regular incentives to buy electric cars which can also bring the price and lifetime ownership costs down.

The Choices Available For Electric Cars Are Now Plentiful

Just a few years ago the range of EVs available was limited. The world’s first mass-market electric car, the Nissan Leaf, was only launched in 2010. Recent years have seen an explosion in the number of models available with dozens on sale and in all styles from hatchbacks to SUVs and sedans. That’s not to mention that motorists can choose between hybrid-electric, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric options too.
